Additional Information

Drawn by Samuel S. Frizzell and published in 1868 by Charles H. Crosby of Boston, this commanding portrait presents General Ulysses S. Grant in full uniform before the United States Capitol. Fellow officers and saddled horses fill the background as the Union's greatest hero stands at the seat of government.

The print appeared during the summer of 1868 as Grant campaigned for the presidency on the Republican ticket. His nomination surprised no one, as the commander who had accepted Lee's surrender at Appomattox just three years earlier remained the most admired figure in the reunited country.

Born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, in 1822, Grant graduated from West Point and served with distinction during the Mexican War before resigning his commission in 1854. When the Civil War erupted, he rose from obscurity to lead all Union forces by 1864, winning the conflict through relentless resolve.

This reproduction provides insight into a pivotal moment when battlefield glory launched a determined leader toward the White House. Considered among the finest presidential portraits of the Reconstruction era, it brings historic distinction to any office, study, or library.
