Additional Information
Printed by George Schlegel and published in 1873 by Geo. Degen of New York, this striking bird's-eye view captures Manhattan looking south from above Central Park. The great rectangular greenspace fills the foreground while the dense grid of the island extends toward the harbor beyond.
Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the park had opened to the public just fifteen years earlier as a democratic refuge from the relentless pace of industrial life. By 1873, its winding paths, lakes, and planted groves drew millions of visitors annually from every corner of the expanding metropolis.
Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge was underway during this period, and elevated railroads were beginning to reshape transportation across the island. Immigration continued to surge, pushing the population toward one million and driving residential development steadily northward past the boundaries of the grounds.
This reproduction provides insight into a pivotal moment when countryside still bordered the northern reaches and the modern skyline existed only in the ambitions of its builders. Considered among the finest views of Gilded Age New York, it brings metropolitan grandeur to any office, study, or living room.
