Additional Information

Drawn and published around 1874 by Otto Krebs of Pittsburgh, this detailed bird's-eye view captures the city at the dramatic confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers where they join to form the Ohio. Birmingham occupies the right foreground while the borough of Allegheny stretches into the distance at left.

By 1874, Pittsburgh had earned its reputation as the iron capital of America, its hillsides crowded with blast furnaces, rolling mills, and foundries that darkened the sky above both waterways. Andrew Carnegie was already consolidating his steel empire, laying the groundwork for an industry that would supply the rails and girders of a continent.

The city's strategic position at the headwaters of the Ohio River system had driven its growth since the days of Fort Pitt during the French and Indian War. Flatboats, steamers, and coal barges carried raw materials downstream while railroads connected the factories to markets in every direction.

This reproduction recalls an era when furnace glow lit the darkness and the waterfront ran thick with commerce that powered the nation's industrial transformation. Considered among the finest views of early Pittsburgh, it brings bold heritage to any office, study, or living room.
