Produced and published by one of the most prolific cartographers of the era, Otis Hoopes Bailey, this bird's eye perspective of Springfield, Massachusetts captures it in a moment of significant growth and transformation in the years following the conclusion of the American Civil War. Springfield was first established in 1636 at the confluence of the Mill, Chicopee, and Westfield Rivers. Its location allowed for thriving trade between New York City, Albany, and Montreal, and the city remains the largest in Western Massachusetts. Springfield played a pivotal role during the American Revolution, and General George Washington established the Springfield Armory in the town to supply the Continental Army with rifles.
Bailey's career spanned more than fifty years, and his works remain among the most esteemed pieces produced during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In 1871 Bailey moved to Boston, and much of his work focused on Massachusetts. He produced 374 panoramic maps during his lifetime, and his work is included in the Library of Congress.
By the latter portion of the eighteenth century, Springfield had grown and transformed the region as the conclusion of the American Civil War brought numerous new residents from the American South and Western Europe who established numerous neighborhoods and communities based along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. Springfield is known for numerous 'firsts,' in the United States, including the invention of basketball, the Merriam-Webster dictionary, arms manufacturer Smith & Wesson, and more. This is truly a unique piece of American cartographical history.
