Produced over a decade after the conclusion of the American Civil War, this fictionalized illustration captures a pivotal moment in the war: Union troops under Major General William Tecumseh Sherman during the famed Atlanta Campaign. This campaign, a turning point in the Union's inroads into the South, ultimately led to the Confederacy's defeat in 1865. The victory not only preserved the Union but also shaped the nation's future during the Reconstruction era and laid the foundation for the Industrial Revolution, which spurred significant economic growth into the 20th century.
The illustration depicts Union troops receiving a religious service conducted by Chaplain P.P. Clooney.
