Additional Information

Published in 1878 by Galt and Hoy of New York and printed by D. Bremner and Company, this bird's-eye view presents Chicopee, Massachusetts, where the Chicopee River meets the Connecticut in Hampden County. An index identifies points of interest across the busy settlement at the heart of the valley's industrial corridor.

The Ames Manufacturing Company anchored the local economy, producing swords, cannons, and bronze castings for the federal government throughout the mid-nineteenth century. Cotton and textile operations employed thousands of workers drawn from across New England and the immigrant communities arriving from Ireland and French Canada.

Powerful falls attracted manufacturers to the area beginning in the 1820s, and two distinct village centers developed around separate production sites. This divided layout gave the town a unique character shaped by the competing interests of rival factory owners and their respective labor forces.

This reproduction offers a window into a hardworking community where the roar of rushing water drove the machinery of national progress and skilled hands built the tools of a growing republic. Considered among the finest views of the era, it brings heritage and character to any office, study, or living room.
