Additional Information

Published in 1879 by O.H. Bailey and J.C. Hazen of Boston, this bird's-eye view presents the villages of Mystic River and Mystic Bridge along the tidal waterway flowing into Long Island Sound. An index identifies points of interest across the paired settlements straddling the border between Stonington and Groton.

The area had earned renown as one of New England's finest shipbuilding centers, its yards launching clippers, whalers, and naval craft throughout the mid-nineteenth century. The celebrated Andrew Jackson, built at the Irons and Grinnell yard in 1855, set a legendary speed record on the Cape Horn passage five years later.

By 1879, wooden construction was yielding to iron and steam, and the once-thriving operations were beginning to quiet. Local enterprise shifted toward textile manufacturing, machine shops, and the trade that kept smaller boats moving through the drawbridge at the heart of the community.

This reproduction offers a window into a storied seafaring settlement during a pivotal moment of transition from sail to engine and from the open ocean to the factory floor. Considered among the finest Connecticut views of the era, it brings maritime heritage to any office, study, or living room.
