One of the earliest publications by the prolific American lithographer's Beck & Pauli, this panoramic map was produced during a time of significant growth and transformation in Terre Haute. Located on the banks of the Wabash River, Terre Haute was first incorporated in 1832 and grew rapidly during the eighteenth century as thriving milling, farming, and pork processing industries offered economic opportunities for immigrants from Eastern and Western Europe who flocked to the city and established numerous neighborhoods and communities based on shared traditions and heritage many of which exist to this day. The Wabash and Erie Canal further opened access to the city and opened it up to markets in the east as well as locations on the Great Lakes.
Bird's eye perspectives were widely popular during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, and Beck & Pauli are among four other lithographers responsible for creating more than half of the Library of Congress's collection of panoramic maps. These perspective maps bear a striking aesthetic that is immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time, creating a link to a shared culture and history that illustrates the development of society. During reconstruction following the conclusion of the American Civil War, Terre Haute was undergoing another boom in population.
Terre Haute became an important center for higher education in the region and is home to Indiana State University. This unique piece of American cartographical history showcases Terre Haute's evolution and expansion as the nation neared the turn of the century.
