Additional Information
Sketched by Horace Bradly and engraved by C.G. Crawford of New York around 1884, this panoramic view presents Round Knob in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The Western North Carolina Railroad cuts across the steep terrain while an inset showcases the Round Knob Hotel and its fountain.
The rail line's route through the Blue Ridge ranked among the most ambitious engineering feats of the post-Civil War South, requiring tunnels, switchbacks, and dizzying grades to cross the Appalachian summit. Convict laborers carved a path through solid granite at elevations exceeding three thousand feet.
The hotel served as a celebrated resort destination, offering cool summer air, mineral springs, and sweeping views that rivaled any location east of the Rockies. Guests arrived by train from piedmont cities, escaping sweltering lowland heat for the refreshing breezes of the high country.
This reproduction provides insight into an era when iron rails opened remote wilderness to tourism and grand lodges perched on dramatic peaks welcomed travelers from across the region. Considered among the finest views of the southern highlands from the period, it brings rugged beauty to any office, den, or living room.
