Additional Information
La Crosse, on the banks of the Mississippi River in Western Wisconsin, was first explored by French fur trappers as early as the seventeenth century. Nathan Myrick established the first permanent settlement in the area in 1842 with a trading post with a small village beginning around it that would continue to expand during the middle parts of the nineteenth century. A thriving lumber industry allowed the city to continue to expand, and the completion of the La Crosse-Milwaukee rail line in 1858 further expanded access and created a permanent link between the two cities that was mutually beneficial.
A thriving brewing industry was also established in the area during the nineteenth century as well and remains a celebrated tradition due to the large influx of German immigrants to the area during the nineteenth century. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, La Crosse became a hub for education with the founding of three colleges and universities. This bird's eye perspective was produced and published by one of the most prolific panoramic mapmakers of the era, Henry Wellge, who, along with four other manufacturers, was responsible for making more than half of all panoramic maps in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress.
Bird's eye perspectives bear a distinctive aesthetic and unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an enduring link between the past and present. Wellge's work features a minimal style that elevates his pieces and gives them unparalleled elegance.
