Based in Brockton, Massachusetts, Albert F. Poole was a prominent artist and mapmaker in the Northeast who produced a large body of work throughout his career, which spanned nearly three decades. He considered himself a master of the bird's eye perspective form. His intricate details and distinct aesthetic make his work stand out from his contemporaries like early pioneer Albert Ruger and other prolific artists like Henry Wellge. Poole retired from illustrating panoramic maps in 1915 and took up photography, producing images of towns and cities across the Northeast until 1919.
Dover is the seventh oldest establishment in the United States, and its history dates back to the earliest settlers who formed camps at the confluence of the Bellamy and Piscataqua rivers as early as 1603. In 1633 a group of English colonists purchased Dover and named the town after Robert Dover. By the time of the publication of this map, Dover was a significant milling center with numerous manufacturing firms located on the banks of the rivers. The industrial revolution in the United States during the late nineteenth century brought considerable wealth to Dover and other small cities across the Midwest and Northeast as demand for steel and lumber grew in major markets like New York and Chicago.
