Located on the southern shores of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, is home to a bustling port that was central to the region's development throughout the nineteenth century. The completion of the Northern Pacific Railway and its terminus in Tacoma earned the city the nickname "Where Rail Meets Sail" and allowed the region to open up to residential growth as well as importing and exporting industries that spurred further growth. This bird's eye perspective shows the town in a period of significant change and transformation as the nation neared the turn of the century and was enjoying a period of great prosperity and cultural development.
Bird's eye perspectives were widely popular during the nineteenth century and served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic features, notable buildings, and economic opportunities. Tacoma was officially incorporated in 1875 and underwent one of the largest population booms in American history when the Northern Pacific Railroad was completed, and the population went from just over one thousand in 1880 to over thirty-five thousand in 1890.
