Additional Information
Produced by prominent lithographer and cartographer T.J. Shepherd Landis, this aerial perspective of Newark, New Jersey, shows the ionic American city in a period of considerable growth, prosperity, and transformation as the nation approached the turn of the twentieth century and the United States experienced significant expansion during the so-called Gilded Age. First settled in 1666, Newark is one of the oldest cities in the United States and has a rich history. Its geographic location on the Passaic River has provided a thriving port economy as well as its close proximity to New York City. It remains the busiest seaport on the East Coast.
Bird's eye perspectives were a stylized form of map that was widely popular during the latter portions and early twentieth century, and their distinctive aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Shepherd focused his work on the New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut area. His style sets him apart from other lithographers of the era who utilized more ornate flourishes instead of his more minimal pieces. Shepherd's career spanned more than three decades, and his maps are part of the permanent collection in the Library of Congress.
This bird's eye perspective is an authentic piece of American cartographical history. Newark is geographically divided into five political wards, which have come to define the city's diverse population and allows distinct communities to develop based on shared cultural heritage and unique traditions.
