Additional Information
Published in 1896, this festive poster advertised the eagerly anticipated Christmas issue of St. Nicholas, America's most beloved children's magazine. Founded by Scribner's in 1873 and named for the patron saint of children, St. Nicholas had become essential reading for young Americans, with contributions from Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, and Frances Hodgson Burnett.
Artists Frank Berkeley Smith and Maud Humphrey designed the poster in collaboration for the Century Company, which had acquired St. Nicholas in 1881. Under the visionary editorship of Mary Mapes Dodge, the magazine served as what she called a "pleasure ground" for children - a world of imagination, illustration, and literary discovery.
By the mid-1890s, St. Nicholas had achieved a circulation of approximately 100,000 copies, and its Christmas issues were among the most treasured publications of the holiday season. Future literary giants including F. Scott Fitzgerald, E. B. White, and Edna St. Vincent Millay would later win prizes through the magazine's celebrated St. Nicholas League.
This reproduction preserves a charming artifact from the golden age of American children's publishing, when illustrated magazines shaped the imaginations of an entire generation. Recognized as one of the finest periodicals ever produced for young readers, St. Nicholas and its holiday posters remain prized collectibles among lovers of Victorian-era illustration.
