Additional Information

Religious theorist Ramakrishna was born in 1836 and adhered to numerous faiths throughout his life but is most well known for being a Hindu mystic, a form of ideology in which the devotee experiences a form of ecstasy in communion with God in which they attain insights into the true meaning of spirituality and the truths hidden in faith. Ramakrishna was attracted to Hinduism at an early age and experienced spiritual visions, which led to him embarking on a path that would lead to him advocating for the unity of all religions, proclaiming that religions are all "so many paths to reach the same goal."

Ramakrishna became known by his followers as a divine incarnation or direct descendent of God, and he utilized parable-based teaching that claimed the ultimate unity of diverse religious experiences, meanings, and teachings that would enable the ultimate realization of the same God. At the age of twenty, Ramakrishna began his career as a temple priest in Calcutta and would go on to live a life of sannyasa, the fourth system of life in Hinduism in which the practitioner undertakes a life of renunciation and visits temples speaking as a guru.

Ramakrishna was reluctant to take on the role of guru; he eventually accepted his influence and founded the Ramakrishna Order, and following his death, his chief disciple Swami Vivekananda started to spread his views across the globe. This is a true piece of religious history capturing the essence of Ramakrishna.
