Additional Information

One of the most iconic and influential figures of the Bedonkohe band of the Ndendahe Apache people, Geronimo is pictured here in 1904, following a long and storied life as a military leader and shaman. Born in 1829 in what is now Arizpe, Sonora, Mexico, Geronimo rose to prominence during the mid-nineteenth century, leading groups of 30 to 50 Apache warriors in raids against both United States and Mexican military forces. These conflicts intensified following the Mexican-American War of 1848, which brought previously Mexican-held lands, including parts of Texas, into the Union.

Geronimo continued to lead raids and resistance campaigns into the latter part of the 19th century. After a lengthy pursuit through northern Mexico during his third breakout from a U.S. reservation in 1885, he ultimately surrendered to Lt. Charles Bare Gatewood. He was first sent to a reservation in Florida, then later transferred to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he lived until his death in 1909 at the age of 79. For the Apache, raiding became both a survival strategy and a means of economic subsistence amid growing pressures from U.S. and Mexican territorial expansion across the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico.

Geronimo's legacy remains complex. While many remember him as a resolute leader and healer, others within the Apache community were critical of his refusal to yield to U.S. government demands. Nonetheless, his name endures as a symbol of Apache resistance and cultural resilience.
