Dating from around 1905, this plate shows three Sioux horsemen in feathered headdresses moving across plains country. It comes from an ambitious photographic survey of Native peoples begun in the early twentieth century and issued in installments over more than two decades.
The project ran from 1907 into the 1930s and eventually filled twenty volumes with portraits and field studies drawn from dozens of communities across the American West. Backing came from a leading financier of the era, whose money made the undertaking possible.
