Additional Information

Captured in 1906 by pioneering photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, this distinguished half-length portrait presents George Washington Carver facing right during a period of remarkable scientific productivity. Johnston, one of America's first female photojournalists, documented the institute during its celebrated twenty-fifth anniversary celebrations that year.

Born into slavery around 1864 in Diamond, Missouri, Carver overcame extraordinary obstacles to become the first Black student at Iowa State Agricultural College, where he earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural science. His academic brilliance attracted the attention of Booker T. Washington, who recruited him to lead Tuskegee's agricultural department in 1896.

At Tuskegee, Carver revolutionized Southern agriculture by championing crop rotation and developing hundreds of products derived from peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans. His research provided economically devastated Southern farmers with alternatives to cotton monoculture, which had depleted the region's soil. His work earned him international recognition, including an invitation to testify before the United States Congress in 1921.

This remarkable portrait stands as a testament to one of America's most influential scientists, whose innovations transformed agricultural practices across the South and beyond. The image provides a compelling connection to an era of groundbreaking achievement and resilience, making it an outstanding addition to any collection celebrating American scientific history and educational excellence.
