Additional Information

Captured around 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, this photograph presents the Sand Beach Bath House standing proudly at the water's edge of Walloon Lake in northern Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The wooden structure rises beside a long pier stretching into the glacial lake's famously clear, spring-fed waters.

Built around 1900 by local businessman Henry Jordan, the bath house featured thirty private rooms where visitors could change, rent wool bathing suits, or enjoy a hot bath for twenty-five cents. The facility passed through several operators before tragically burning in May 1906, making this image among the final records of the building's existence.

Walloon Lake transformed from a quiet logging settlement into one of Michigan's premier summer resort destinations during the late nineteenth century, served by the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railway. A young Ernest Hemingway would soon spend twenty-two summers at his family's nearby cottage, drawing inspiration from the surrounding woods and waters for his earliest fiction.

This reproduction serves as a reminder of an era when lakeside resorts beckoned city dwellers northward each summer and freshwater bathing houses anchored small resort communities across the Great Lakes region. Considered a rare and valuable piece of Michigan resort history, it brings nostalgic charm to any lake house, cabin, or vacation home.
