Additional Information
Published around 1908 from a painting by G. Liebscher and copyrighted by F.A. Schneider, this vivid scene depicts Betsy Ross seated with needle and thread, sewing the first American flag. The image captures the beloved national legend at the moment she brought the stars and stripes to life for a fledgling nation.
According to tradition, General George Washington visited the Philadelphia upholsterer in June 1776 and asked her to create a banner for the new country. Ross reportedly suggested five-pointed stars instead of the six-pointed design Washington had sketched, demonstrating how a single snip of her scissors could produce the simpler shape.
Born Elizabeth Griscom in Philadelphia in 1752, Ross operated an upholstery business on Arch Street after the death of her first husband, John Ross, early in the Revolutionary War. While historians continue to debate the precise details of the flag story, her descendants first publicized the account in 1870 through a paper read before the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
This reproduction provides insight into a cherished founding story that helped define American patriotism for generations of schoolchildren and citizens alike. Considered among the most recognizable images in the national heritage, it brings enduring pride to any classroom, office, or family gathering space.
This reproduction offers a window into an age when great composers held the stature of modern celebrities and their images adorned parlors across two continents. Treasured among the finest nineteenth-century tributes to classical achievement, it brings distinction to any study, library, or listening room.
