The third-deepest lake in the United States, after Crater Lake and Lake Tahoe, Lake Chelan is located in the Cascade Mountains of north-central Washington State. The surrounding region remains largely unpopulated, making it an ideal destination for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and hiking. It is also home to a thriving wine scene, with more than thirty tasting rooms showcasing wines produced in the area. This photograph was taken in 1908 by Arthur Clarence Pillsbury, a prolific American photographer, filmmaker, and inventor known for his pioneering work in time-lapse photography. Born in Medford, Massachusetts, to physician parents, Pillsbury later moved with his family to Auburn, California, and went on to study at Stanford University.
The Lake Chelan Dam, completed in 1927, raised the lake's elevation by approximately twenty-one feet. Today, the lake remains nearly twelve hundred feet deep and is divided into two basins, with the northern basin being significantly deeper than the southern. The region's climate remains relatively dry year-round, contributing to its unique landscape and agricultural appeal.
