Additional Information

Photographed circa 1910 by Edward S. Curtis, this sweeping landscape titled On Spokane River depicts seven Spokane men on horseback near a tributary of the Spokane River in eastern Washington. Fir trees frame the riders as mountains rise in the distance, evoking the vast territory the Spokane once called home.

The Spokane, whose name is often translated as children of the sun, lived along the Spokane and Columbia Rivers for thousands of years, following a seasonal round of fishing, hunting, and gathering across three million acres. The river was central to their existence, providing abundant salmon that sustained villages.

Curtis documented the Spokane in the seventh volume of The North American Indian, his twenty-volume survey produced between 1907 and 1930. The volume covers the Salishan peoples of the interior Plateau, including the Yakima, Klickitat, and Kutenai alongside the Spokane.

This magnificent photograph stands as a testament to the Spokane people's bond with the river that bore their name, offering a window into the horseback traditions that defined Plateau life. It appeals to collectors of Pacific Northwest Indigenous heritage, early twentieth-century photography, and Edward Curtis's matchless documentary legacy.
