Additional Information
This map was produced during a period of significant transformation culturally, politically, and economically across the European continent in 1912 as the rule of the Ottoman Empire had waned in the Eastern regions and the threat of World War I loomed, which would break out only two years later in 1914 following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir apparent to Austria-Hungary. The War would influence European politics and culture for the remaining century, including the devastation caused across the globe after the start of World War II in 1939.
This map was created by the iconic Rand-McNally firm and bears a distinctive style and classic appearance that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present that illustrates the development of European life over the past century. Europe also experienced another transformative period in the latter portions of the nineteenth century when the Industrial Revolution changed the urban landscape of Great Britain and other Western European countries. Workers moved from largely agrarian areas to more densely populated urban centers, and towns and cities grew exponentially. This led to a new working class, which would, in turn, lead to social reforms, labor laws, and the formation of numerous trade unions designed to protect workers' rights.
This authentic piece of cartographical history depicts Europe as it developed a new identity across the continent, and every nation was impacted by World War I and the subsequent generations of philosophers, artists, and literary icons.
