Romanian sculptor, painter, and photographer Constantine Brancusi remains one of the most revered artists of the twentieth century, and his works are included among the most prestigious collections around the world. Brancusi made his career in France, though he studied in Bucharest, Milan, and Paris while honing his skills and using traditional Romanian folk art as an influence paired with modern masters. This photograph of one of his most iconic pieces, The Kiss, demonstrates his traditional style and minimal aesthetic as well as his proto-cubist and non-literary representation. This plaster sculpture is one of many iterations that Brancusi created during his career, which he further simplified in each version.
Brancusi became popular in the United States in the early nineteenth century, and a version of this work is on display in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Brancusi was born in 1876 and experienced some of the most significant changes in modern history as Europe underwent considerable changes brought on by both World Wars as well as advances in technology and cultural shifts. Brancusi was also influenced by Byzantine and Dionysian art, which can be traced through the history of his home country. Brancusi showed early skills with woodworking and eventually crafted a violin with rudimentary tools, which led to an industrialist enrolling him in the Craiova School of Arts and Crafts.
