Taken by the prolific American photographer and "father of foreign photographic news," George Grantham Bain, this image of the iconic Mexican General Pancho Villa captures him in his prime in the days leading up to the Battle of Ojinga. Villa was at the height of his power in 1914 and was a vocal advocate for land ownership rights though he was unable to implement these reforms while in power. The early portions of the twentieth century were a contentious time in Mexican politics, and Civil War broke out in 1915. Villa was a savvy figure who used international media to build his reputation as a revolutionary figure.
George Bain was a critical figure, and the Library of Congress has a dedicated collection of his work, including 40,000 negative prints and 50,000 photographs his work is among the most important pieces of historical pictures that documented life from the 1860s to the 1930s. Bain's work bears a classic, distinctive style that creates a bond between the past and present, and he documented current events for newspapers across the globe. Bain's most prolific period was from 1900 to the 1920s, and his work is highly regarded by historians and journalists to this day.
