Created in 1917 by English artist Bernard Sleigh, this enchanting map depicts a dreamlike realm where nursery rhymes, fairy tales, Arthurian legend, and folklore from many lands converge. Castles, coves, and fabled shores unfold in luminous color across the sweeping panoramic composition, styled as a relic from some forgotten age.
Sleigh first sketched this fantastical geography to amuse his young family, peopling it with characters and places from cherished bedtime favorites. Published in 1917 with a sixteen page companion guide, the design was intended to adorn children's rooms and soon beguiled admirers far beyond them.
A muralist and stained glass designer allied with the Arts and Crafts movement in Birmingham, Sleigh nurtured a lifelong passion for fairy lore and mythology. His masterpiece emerged as Britain's fascination with fairies neared its peak, and decades later the artwork was adapted into decorative fabric.
This wondrous reproduction stands as a testament to the timeless allure of make believe and offers a window into the magical landscapes of childhood reverie. A spellbinding focal point for nurseries, playrooms, bedrooms, or fairy tale themed spaces, it remains among the most adored and influential of all fantasy maps.
