Inaugurated on April 29, 1900, the North Coast Limited became one of America's oldest and most prestigious named passenger trains.
The composition showcases the engineering marvel of a steam engine conquering mountainous terrain at nearly six thousand feet of elevation. The Northern Pacific Railway traced its origins to 1864, when President Lincoln signed the company's charter, and its tracks roughly followed the route charted by Lewis and Clark decades earlier.
Vienna-born artist Gustav Wilhelm Krollmann created this artwork after emigrating to the United States in 1923 and becoming the principal artist for Northern Pacific's celebrated poster campaign.
