Created by Oscar Rabe Hanson in 1923, this bold poster depicts two polo players in full gallop, advertising leisure destinations accessible via the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad. Printed by the National Printing & Engraving Company of Chicago, it was part of the landmark Insull Transit Poster Campaign - one of the most celebrated graphic art programs in American transportation history.
Utilities tycoon Samuel Insull, a former assistant to Thomas Edison, acquired the struggling interurban line in 1916 and transformed it into America's fastest electric railroad, connecting Chicago's Loop to Milwaukee at speeds exceeding seventy miles per hour. Drawing inspiration from Frank Pick's pioneering poster program for the London Underground, Insull commissioned Chicago's finest graphic designers to create approximately 160 posters promoting not the trains themselves, but the destinations they served.
Hanson was among the campaign's most talented artists, designing an estimated 29 posters between 1923 and 1926 for the North Shore Line, South Shore Line, and Chicago Rapid Transit Company. His bold compositions and graphic style earned international recognition, winning medals in Art Directors Club competitions, with examples entering the collection of London's Victoria & Albert Museum.
Tragically, Hanson died from an accidental gunshot wound at just twenty-five years old. His work was exhibited posthumously at the Society of Independent Artists and the Salons of America during the 1930s. This reproduction preserves a rare masterwork from an artist whose brief career placed him among the finest American poster designers of the Jazz Age.
