Additional Information

Photographed circa 1923 by Edward S. Curtis, this quietly elegant portrait titled Klamath Woman presents a Klamath woman in a composed head-and-shoulders study, her gaze directed gently to the left. The understated composition reveals a calm dignity characteristic of Curtis' finest portraits of Indigenous women.

The Klamath people have inhabited the lake-filled basins and forested highlands of southern Oregon for more than thirteen thousand years. Women held essential roles in Klamath society, harvesting wokas from the marsh waters, weaving intricate basketry, and preserving the cultural knowledge passed through successive generations.

Curtis devoted the thirteenth volume of The North American Indian to the peoples of northern California and southern Oregon, including the Klamath. His monumental twenty-volume survey produced between 1907 and 1930 documented their traditions during a period of sweeping change across the Pacific Northwest.

This graceful portrait stands as a testament to Klamath women whose labor and wisdom sustained their communities for millennia, offering a window into a heritage shaped by the waterways of southern Oregon. It appeals to collectors of Indigenous portraiture, early twentieth-century photography, and the distinguished legacy of Edward Curtis.
