Additional Information
Photographed circa 1923 by Edward S. Curtis, this poignant portrait titled Old Klamath Woman presents an elderly Klamath woman whose weathered features speak to a lifetime spent along the waterways and forested valleys of southern Oregon. The quiet intensity of her expression conveys the accumulated knowledge of generations.
The Klamath people have inhabited the lake-studded basins of southern Oregon for more than thirteen thousand years. Elder women served as keepers of tribal memory, maintaining the oral traditions, seasonal knowledge, and practical skills that sustained their communities through centuries of profound change.
Curtis published this photograph as plate 440 in the thirteenth volume of The North American Indian, his twenty-volume survey produced between 1907 and 1930. The volume documents the Klamath alongside the Hupa, Yurok, Karok, and other peoples of northern California and southern Oregon.
This moving portrait stands as a testament to Klamath elders who preserved their people's traditions through decades of upheaval, offering a window into a life rooted in the land. It appeals to collectors of Pacific Northwest Indigenous heritage, early twentieth-century photography, and the enduring legacy of Edward Curtis.
