The Klamath people have inhabited the river basins of southern Oregon for more than thirteen thousand years, making them among the longest-established communities on the continent. They knew Crater Lake as giiwas, a deeply revered spiritual destination where chiefs and shamans undertook vision quests along the towering caldera walls.
Curtis published this photograph as plate 470 in the thirteenth volume of The North American Indian, his twenty-volume survey produced between 1907 and 1930. The volume documents the Hupa, Yurok, Karok, and Klamath among other northern California and southern Oregon peoples during an era of rapid change.
