Additional Information
Photographed on October 19, 1926, as part of the George Grantham Bain news photograph collection, this historic team portrait presents the New York Yankees posed together at the close of their American League championship season. The photograph was taken just days after the team's hard-fought World Series loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
The 1926 roster featured seven future members of the Baseball Hall of Fame, including Babe Ruth standing prominently in the center of the back row, first baseman Lou Gehrig, second baseman Tony Lazzeri, outfielder Earle Combs, and pitchers Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock. Manager Miller Huggins, himself later enshrined in Cooperstown, guided this formidable squad.
The 1926 season marked the beginning of one of the most dominant stretches in baseball history, as the Yankees would capture three consecutive American League pennants from 1926 through 1928, winning back-to-back World Series titles in 1927 and 1928 with largely the same core of players shown in this photograph.
This outstanding photograph stands as a testament to one of the greatest assemblages of talent in the history of the sport, offering a window into the foundation of the Yankees dynasty. It appeals to collectors of baseball heritage, Golden Age sports photography, and American athletic history.
