Pictured here in 1927, the iconic whaling ship Charles W. Morgan stands as a testament to 19th-century maritime history. Built in 1841, the Morgan was used to harvest whale blubber, a primary source of oil for fuel during that era. Today, she is the world's oldest surviving, non-wrecked wooden merchant vessel and the only 19th-century whaling ship still in existence. Now preserved and on display at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut, the Morgan remains a symbol of America's maritime heritage.
Often referred to simply as The Morgan, the ship completed 37 voyages over 80 years of service. These expeditions, which lasted from nine months to five years, typically carried a crew of around 33 members. The Morgan brought thousands of barrels of whale oil and quantities of whale bone back to her home port in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a center of the global whaling industry at the time.
Designated a National Historic Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, the Morgan underwent significant preservation efforts beginning in 1968 to restore her seaworthiness. During the restoration, the ship's decorative white stripe with black squares was replicated-an 1840s camouflage tactic designed to resemble gun ports from a distance, deterring pirates and hostile forces during voyages that spanned the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
