Created in 1929 by Leslie Ragan for the New York Central Lines, this bold travel poster celebrates Chicago. A lone figure gazes from Grant Park's classical colonnade toward the towering skyscrapers of Michigan Avenue, their silhouettes rising beneath a dramatic, billowing thundercloud.
The New York Central commissioned the design to lure travelers to Chicago aboard its express trains, including the famed 20th Century Limited, the pride of its fleet. During the late 1920s, competing railroads enlisted leading illustrators to glamorize their flagship destinations.
Iowa-born and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Leslie Ragan (1897-1972) became the railroad's premier poster artist, renowned for his luminous Art Deco cityscapes. This image, his first for the line, transformed the skyline into a radiant symbol of American ambition and modern progress.
Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of rail travel and offers a window into a booming metropolis on the eve of the Great Depression. With its vivid color and architectural grandeur, it makes a prized addition to an office, study, or library.
