Additional Information
Created around 1930 by the British artist George Tait, this travel poster carries the eye into the high Himalayas of Kashmir. Snow-covered peaks rise above a still mountain lake, their white summits mirrored in misty water under a pale northern sky.
The Indian State Railways issued it to sell the mountain north to holidaymakers, part of a wide poster campaign shown at stations across Europe and America. In the 1930s Kashmir drew climbers and sightseers toward the greatest peaks on earth.
Tait was one of several visiting designers hired through the official publicity bureau, his name recorded in colonial government ledgers beside his fee. Their posters framed India as a land of mountains, gardens, and ancient cities for travelers arriving by steamer and rail.
Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of travel and offers a window into the British Raj, when remote Himalayan valleys first reached a Western audience. Its cool blues make a prized addition to a study, library, or lodge.
