Additional Information

The Oregon Trail was one of the primary routes for pioneers journeying across the United States to the Pacific Northwest. Originally used by fur trappers as early as 1811, it later became a pathway for settlers who traveled by large, wheeled wagons to reach the remote region. Here, they established dairy farms and exported lumber from the Northwest's dense forests to rapidly expanding markets in the East as the nation grew following the American Revolution. This depiction of the Oregon Trail, produced in 1932, captures its historic significance with a distinctive aesthetic that transports viewers back in time, forging a lasting link between the past and present.

As one of the most iconic parts of 19th-century American history, the Oregon Trail's terminus in the fertile Willamette Valley gave it lasting fame. Over the decades, the trail saw various improvements-bridges, ferries, and roads-that made the journey faster and less treacherous than in its earliest years, when it could only be traversed on foot or horseback. Though there were multiple starting points, all routes converged in the Platte River Valley near Fort Kearny in what was then the Nebraska Territory.

This map beautifully illustrates the vastness and difficulty of the trail, celebrating the resilience of the pioneers who undertook the journey to build communities in the Pacific Northwest - cities and towns that continue to thrive today.
