Additional Information
Captured in April 1933 by legendary photographer Ansel Adams, this evocative black and white image presents Yosemite's iconic Half Dome framed through snow-laden apple tree branches. Adams gifted this photograph to National Park Service Director Horace Albright, establishing a relationship that would profoundly shape American conservation photography for decades.
Adams had already begun developing his signature style of dramatic contrast and precise tonal range when he created this remarkable composition. His deep connection to Yosemite began in childhood, and the park would remain his most celebrated subject throughout an illustrious career spanning more than fifty years of groundbreaking wilderness documentation.
The National Park Service later commissioned Adams in 1941 to create photographic murals for the Department of the Interior Building in Washington. Although World War II halted that ambitious project, the relationship between Adams and the park service produced some of the most influential landscape photographs in American history.
This striking photograph stands as a testament to Adams' mastery of natural light and composition during his formative years. The delicate interplay of snow-covered branches against Yosemite's granite monument offers a window into wilderness preservation ideals, making it an extraordinary addition to any collection celebrating American landscape photography.
