Additional Information
Created around 1935 by the New York artist Dorothy Waugh, this travel poster promotes the national parks under the banner Life at its Best. Hikers and a rider on horseback move through rugged mountain country, their crisp silhouettes set against a stark two-tone sky.
The National Park Service printed it during the New Deal, when the young agency first used graphic art to win public support. A set of colorful posters went out to railroads, schools, and auto clubs to send Americans out west.
Waugh trained as both an artist and a landscape architect, a rare path for a woman of her day. Working for the government, she designed seventeen of these posters between 1934 and 1936, pairing simple shapes with strong, saturated color.
Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of travel and offers a window into Depression-era America, when the nation sold its wild places as a tonic for body and soul. Its modern style makes a prized addition to a den, office, or cabin.
