Additional Information
Produced in the period of peace between World War I and World War II in 1936, this pictorial map illustrated by Joe Godfrey is a remarkable example of this style from a period when they were widely popular and would have been displayed in outfitters and fishing gear shops as well as fishing clubs and tournaments to illustrate the diversity of sport fish found in each distinct region and highlight these as aspirations for anglers across the nation. This map features the contiguous United States, Mexico, Central America, and Canada, with insets including Tahiti, Hawaii, New Zealand, and Panama at the lower left.
One of the unique features of this pictorial map is that in addition to the fifty six species of big game fish it depicts, it also includes an image of a cultural stereotype of each state catching the fish most commonly associated with their region. This gives the map a distinctive aesthetic and unique character, allowing the viewer a glimpse into the past and creating an indelible bond between the past and present. The map also includes the current of the jet stream, a natural phenomenon that has a significant impact on the sport of big game angling in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, as well as the Eastern Florida coast, which remains a popular destination for big game fishing.
Joe Godfrey's big game fishing map is an authentic piece of American angling culture and remains a tribute to a widely popular activity that continues to grow today.
