Additional Information
Created in 1936 by Swedish artist Hans-Erik Olsén, this travel poster celebrates the Göta Canal, the nation's storied inland waterway. A white steamer glides along a narrow channel, slicing a path through lush green countryside under a calm northern sky.
Sweden built the Göta Canal in the early 1800s, a vast feat of engineering that linked the west coast to the Baltic across the heart of the country. Tens of thousands of soldiers dug it with shovels, opening a "blue ribbon" nearly 200 kilometres long.
Within decades, railways stole the canal's cargo traffic, but a new role emerged: leisure cruising. By Olsén's day, graceful steamers carried holiday passengers from Gothenburg to Stockholm, slipping past farms, forests, castles, and a long ladder of hand-cut stone locks.
Today this artwork stands as a testament to the golden age of unhurried travel and offers a window into a slower world, when crossing the land meant days adrift on quiet water. Its serene palette makes a prized addition to a study, hallway, or lake house.
