Influential author and one of the earliest practitioners of the self-help movement, this promotional photograph of Napoleon Hill holding his most popular work, "Think and Grow Rich," remains an enduring tribute to his remarkable legacy and the impact this work had on the thousands of people who bought the work and continue to utilize its advice and philosophy. Hill was born and raised in southwestern Virginia and became a writer for his father's newspaper at the early age of thirteen, which would shape his career for decades. Hill claimed to be an attorney though this has been disputed, although he did work for Rufus Ayers, who was a former Attorney General for the state of Virginia.
Hill authored numerous works focused on achieving success, with "Think and Grow Rich" becoming his most revered, with a philosophy that would be recognized in modern times as manifesting or believing that the mind can produce results through belief and commitment. He would comment on the central theme of this philosophy in 1967:
"Anything the human mind can believe, the human mind can achieve. That is the Supreme Secret.... This is the secret known in bygone times; this is the secret which governs present-day accomplishment; this is the secret which will follow man to the stars. This is the secret of the ages."
