Created by artist RW for the WPA Federal Art Project, this poster promotes the Index of American Design, an ambitious documentation project recording American decorative and folk arts. Launched in 1935, this unprecedented program employed artists nationwide to create detailed watercolor renderings of traditional crafts, textiles, furniture, and folk art+.
The Index preserved disappearing American material culture as industrialization replaced handcrafted objects with mass production. Artists meticulously documented quilts, weathervanes, toys, pottery, and countless everyday objects representing regional traditions and immigrant contributions, creating visual archives of American creativity before these artifacts vanished from collective memory during modernization.
This nationwide project employed over 1,000 artists producing approximately 18,000 watercolor plates, now housed at the National Gallery of Art.
