Additional Information
Illustrated by the innovative Chester Don Powell, this serigraph of Zion National Park was produced and published in 1938 in an effort to entice tourists as the nation was exiting the economic downturn associated with the Great Depression. Powell studied art in Chicago and moved to San Francisco in 1927. Following the stock market crash in 1929, he joined road crews as a flag man, though his talents were later recognized, and he was given a position within the National Park Service. His distinctive style and unique aesthetic are on display with this vintage poster that immediately transports the viewer back in time creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
Zion National Park is located at the confluence of the Colorado Plateau, the Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert giving it distinct geography and a high level of biodiversity. Zion's varied geographical features include mountains, canyons, and buttes, as well as rivers and slot canyons, and it remains one of the most iconic natural features in southern Utah. Given its remote location and rugged terrain, tourism into Zion did not become popular until the first road into the park was completed in 1917. During the 1930s, the National Park Service was working to raise awareness of national parks and produced this series of posters to attract visitors.
Zion National Park remains one of the most iconic national parks, and as of 2009, more than eighty-five percent of the park has been protected as a wilderness area.
