Additional Information
Photographed in September 1940 by Jack Delano, this pastoral image shows cows on the farm of Mrs. DeWitt Lassen near Cheshire, Connecticut. Made for the Farm Security Administration, the photograph documents a New England dairy farm during the waning years of the Depression, when the agency assisted struggling rural families.
Cheshire, nestled in the rolling countryside of New Haven County, was part of the farming heartland of southern Connecticut. Small dairy farms like the Lassen operation formed the backbone of the local economy, and the FSA's programs helped many survive the prolonged hardship that gripped rural America throughout the 1930s.
Delano traveled across New England in the autumn of 1940, producing work that captured the character of the region's farms, villages, and rural communities. His photographs combine thoughtful composition with respect for the people and landscapes he encountered, distinguishing his contribution to the FSA's remarkable documentary legacy.
This serene photograph stands as a testament to the resilience of New England farming during a challenging era, offering a window into the rhythms of a Connecticut dairy farm on the eve of the Second World War. It appeals to collectors of New England heritage, FSA photography, and agricultural history.
