Additional Information
Painted by Leslie Ragan in the 1940s, this breathtaking travel poster depicts a New York Central train gliding along the Hudson River beneath the dramatic mountain landscape of the Hudson Highlands. Ragan's masterful handling of light and atmosphere transforms a railroad advertisement into a luminous celebration of one of America's most storied waterways.
Born in Woodbine, Iowa in 1897, Ragan studied at the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines before attending the Art Institute of Chicago. His first New York Central poster - a Chicago cityscape - was published in 1930, launching a prolific partnership that would span three decades and produce some of the most iconic railroad posters in American history, including his celebrated depictions of the 20th Century Limited.
The New York Central's poster campaign had begun in 1925, timed to the railroad's centennial celebration, with a mission to showcase the natural landscapes and great cities along its routes. The Hudson River corridor, beloved since the days of the Hudson River School painters, was among the line's most compelling selling points - a journey through mountain passes and river vistas that rivaled any scenic railway in the world.
This reproduction captures the golden age of American railroad travel art at its most magnificent. Ragan's original posters have commanded prices exceeding $23,000 at auction, making this an exceptional opportunity to own a museum-quality print of one of the twentieth century's most admired transportation artists.
