Dmitri Shostakovich came to international prominence in 1926 with the premiere of his First Symphony in 1926. Shostakovich achieved success in Soviet Era Russia, though he personally had a complex relationship with the political ideology. His work would eventually be denounced by the Government in 1948 under the Zhadanov Doctrine, which divided the citizens and art world into two distinct groups, which were either imperialistic proponents of Western ideologies or loyalists to the Soviet regime. Shostakovich would later receive acclaim from the Russian Government and would go on to receive the Order of Lenin, a prestigious award reserved for the most respected Russian citizens.
Shostakovich's reputation has grown since his death in 1962, and his work combines several musical influences, including neoclassicism, ambiance, and elements of discordant compositions. In recent years, scholars have begun to explore his positions and how they reflect his opinions toward Soviet-era politics within Russia. His prolific body of work contains fifteen symphonies, two sonatas, and three ballets, in addition to other compositions that remain highly influential for neoclassical composers. Shostakovich was born in Saint Petersburg in 1906 and began his musical studies at the age of nine with piano lessons by his mother. His skill was noticed early on, and at the age of nineteen, he would attend the Petrograd Conservatory under the close lens of Alexander Glazunov.
