Additional Information

Photographed on September 7, 1960, this striking image captures LaSalle Pocatello presenting a gift to Senator John F. Kennedy on stage during a presidential campaign rally at the Pocatello High School Auditorium in Idaho. Members of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe performed a traditional dance at the event.

LaSalle Pocatello was the grandson of Tondzaosha, the Northern Shoshone leader known to history as Chief Pocatello. Born around 1815, Tondzaosha led his people through decades of conflict before relocating to the Fort Hall Indian Reservation under the 1868 Fort Bridger Treaty. The city of Pocatello, Idaho, bears his name.

The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes have inhabited the Snake River Plain of southeastern Idaho since time immemorial. Their Fort Hall Reservation, established in 1867, remains home to descendants of the Shoshone and Bannock peoples who once ranged across a vast territory spanning present-day Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana.

This compelling photograph stands as a testament to the enduring civic presence of the Shoshone-Bannock people, offering a window into a historic intersection of tribal leadership and national politics. It appeals to collectors of Native American heritage, mid-twentieth-century political photography, and American presidential campaign history.
