Additional Information
Photographed in June 1942 for the Office of War Information, this remarkable color image shows a woman checking electrical assemblies at the Vega Aircraft Corporation plant in Burbank, California. The photograph captures the skill and focus of a defense worker contributing to the industrial mobilization of the Second World War.
The Vega Aircraft Corporation, a subsidiary of Lockheed, was among the major manufacturers operating in Southern California during the war. The Burbank plant produced thousands of military aircraft, and women made up a rapidly growing share of the workforce as men departed for service overseas.
The Office of War Information commissioned color photographs to document the mobilization of American industry and the vital role of women in the defense workforce. These rare color images preserve an extraordinarily detailed record of the factories and assembly lines that transformed the American economy during the conflict.
This striking photograph stands as a testament to the contributions of women workers who helped build the arsenal of democracy, offering a window into the wartime transformation of the American industrial workforce. It appeals to collectors of World War II home front photography, women's labor history, and American aviation heritage.
