Additional Information
One of the most iconic pieces of American World War II history, the "We Can Do It!" poster remains not only an enduring symbol of the American feminist movement but a pointed symbol of the American spirit that allowed the Allied forces to prevail against the Axis forces. Because of the nature of World War II, where most of the male workforce was utilized in the armed forces in varying capacities from combat to logistic support, the need for women in the workplace increased, and this broke many barriers for women that had been in place in the previous years.
Some nineteen million women entered the workforce in these years. This poster inspired women across the country to join the workforce and take on roles in factories to support the war effort by taking roles in factories and other manufacturing facilities. This image became popular in American culture and inspired songs and other creative works, including a dramatic film in 1944. This movement also increased desegregation among American female workers. It catalyzed the early Civil Rights movement, which would gain significant traction in the post-war years as GIs returned to a segregated America after serving across Europe and experiencing equal rights.
This inspirational poster is one of the most recognized pieces of the era and bears a distinctive aesthetic and unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time. This is truly an authentic piece of American design history.
