Additional Information
Taken at their base in Ramitelli, Italy, this photograph highlights two Tuskegee Airmen, Woodrow Crockett and Edward Gleed, in the last years of their deployment during World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen were first deployed to North Africa in 1943, with the 99th Pursuit Squadron joining the 33rd Fighter Group under the command of General Officer William Wallace Momyer. They then conducted an air assault on the small island of Panalleria, resulting in the surrender of nearly twelve thousand Italian troops. The success of this mission cleared sea lanes in the Mediterranean and earned them a Distinguished Unit Citation.
Taken by the prolific American photographer Toni Frissell, this image remains an enduring piece of military history that demonstrates the sacrifices and contributions made by black troops during World War II. Frissell volunteered her photography services to the American Red Cross in 1941, and she went to the front lines of the European theater twice during the war. Her career started at Vogue magazine before she shifted to documenting political and military events for the following decades. Her work remains among some of the most critical war photography of the twentieth century.
This image was taken at the single-runway air base in Ramitelli that had been constructed by the Corps of Engineers in 1944. The Tuskegee Airmen assisted with bombing missions in Central Europe, where Axis forces had become concentrated in the last years of the conflict. This photo offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the Tuskegee Airmen.
