Additional Information
Dating to 1946, this map lays the history of America across a map of the United States, the nation's long past set down state by state and event by event, from the first landings to the early years of the twentieth century.
It is by Aaron Bohrod, a social-realist illustrator from Chicago, and comes from Associated American Artists of New York. It was his only map, one of three, beside companion maps of the country's land and its folklore by Sample and Gropper, and was popular in its day.
At its heart stands John Brown of Bleeding Kansas, set against a blazing sky in the years before the Civil War. Around him sit the great events of the American past, their names spelled across the land, from Columbus stepping ashore in 1492 to the San Francisco earthquake of 1909.
This map stands as a testament to the American past from sea to sea, offering a window into a young nation's history on a single sheet. One of the most colourful of all old maps of America, it lends a turbulent, epic energy to any living room, office, or study.
